Hackberry Men's Shed

Carleton Place, Ontario, has an active Men's Shed, which welcomes participation by local men.
In honour of our town's official tree, we call ourselves the Hackberry Shed.

morning chat at the CP Hackberry Shed

The Hackberry Shed meets in an actual heated shed. The shed has a substantial collection of tools and materials which members can use in community or personal projects. Members meet there on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings from about 9:30 AM to about noon for conversation, mutual support, occasionally straying into lighthearted mutual harrassment. Often there are a number of Shedders who are at the Shed for coffee and chat around 2:30 to 4 pm every weekday and sometimes on Saturday.

In addition, there is a biweekly breakfast meeting (alternate Tuesdays at 7:30 AM at the Gourmet Restaurant on Highway 7), and we also have reserved a room at the Arena for Tuesday evening meetings at 6:40. All of this is generally what happens. Nothing is cut in stone.

In order to be maximally inclusive, the membership fee in our Carleton Place based Hackberry Shed is a nominal $5 per year. Additional contributions are welcome. The group occasionally receives grant funding as well.

Topics of conversation are wide-ranging, but controversial topics (especially politics and religion) are discouraged, so as not to disrupt the cohesion of the group!

The Men's Shed movement is an international organization promoting social connections and community engagement by men. It's organized in local chapters. A Men's Shed provides a safe and friendly environment where men can work on meaningful projects, which gives a sense of purpose. Men work at their own pace, in their own time, in the company of other men. It's a place where you learn or teach new skills and find new opportunities and interests while making new friends. A Shed offers men an alternate way to reach out to avoid isolation while giving back to society.
